Historic Center of Manizales
It is a true cultural and architectural treasure, cataloged as an Asset of Cultural Interest of Colombia. This set of buildings with Republican architecture is a jewel that tells the history of the city. One of the most notable elements is the majestic Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, a marvel of neo-Gothic style. With its imposing 113 meters high, it is the highest cathedral in the city and in Colombia.
The history of this cathedral is fascinating as its construction began after the old cathedral was destroyed by fire in 1925. The new cathedral was completed in 1939 and its architecture is simply stunning. In addition, the second Episcopal or Archbishop's Palace was erected starting in 1926, further enriching the architectural landscape of the historic center.
The Caldas Government Palace, built after the same fire in 1925, is another architectural jewel found in this area. The Liquor Building, built around 1944, is located adjacent to the Government Palace and is linked to it by a small alley and a bridge.
The Casa Estrada, dating from 1927, is one of the most representative buildings in the historic center, as is the Manuel Sanz Montoya Building or Palace, which initially housed the Majestic Palace Hotel and then the Hotel Europa. Today, it is used for offices.
The Historic Center also houses Building Z, which includes the La Cúpula Rooftop, an art deco-style building dating back to 1936. The Hotel Escorial, opened for the 1936 National Sports Games, is a testament to the rich history of the place.
In the surroundings of Plaza de Bolívar, we find other emblematic buildings such as the Tamanaco Building, Arab, Rivas, Casa Jaramillo and many more, which make the historic center of Manizales one of the most representative in Colombia due to its perfect architectural planning. The mix of styles and historical wealth make this place an unmissable destination for lovers of architecture and culture.
