
Bird Watching in Privileged Area
86 kilometers from Pereira in the northwest of Risaralda. Due to its geographical location there is a great variety of bird species because it borders El Chocó biogeographic. It has a record of more than 350 species.
The protected area has an area of 13,187 hectares and an average temperature of 20 degrees Celsius.
The trip there is an experience in itself, the San Juan blade is located to the west of the department of Risaralda between the municipalities of Apía, Pueblo Rico, Mistrató and Belén de Umbría.
It is made up of a stretch of approximately 25 kilometers in length in the Western Cordillera, it has 2,500 protected hectares.
The Golden Tanager route is an endemic species of Colombia, also local, found in the Western Cordillera and north of the Central Andes; with threat status in the “Vulnerable” (VU) category.
It is common to observe it at some times on the routes of the municipality of Mistrató, on the Pacific slope. In addition, you can see the Compass, the Lightning Manakin, the Emerald Tanager, the Prince Sparrowhawk and the Multicolored Tanager, among others.
From Mistrató, located an hour and a half from Pereira, you can continue towards the Mampay path, where two routes begin, one via Costa Rica and the other route called Sutú, which is the municipality that has the most endemic species 17, almost endemic 26 , near threatened 6, vulnerable birds 6, endangered birds 4 and critically endangered birds 2.
